The detox process is a key first step on the way to a full and well-rounded recovery from dependency or addiction, and those who choose detox as the first step in their recovery process are more likely to go longer without falling into relapse. Because of the unique side effects that can accompany detoxification from opiate abuse—muscle pains, insomnia, anxiety, and nausea, to name a few—it is important to tailor the detox process in such a way that it will help recovering addicts combat opiate-specific withdrawal symptoms. Read on to learn about Renaissance Ranch’s unique, in-depth approach to detoxification for opiate dependent clients.
Medical Detox
Medical detox is our recommended method of detox for those recovering from opiate addiction. It gives addicts the opportunity to undergo detox while under the supervision of highly trained treatment specialists, who are prepared to deal with the wide range of withdrawal symptoms that accompany detox. Those with a history of seizures or any other medical challenge associate with withdrawal are especially good candidates for medical detox because these challenges will need to be addressed under watchful care.
A medical detox for opiate addiction involves gradually decreasing doses of opiate-substitute medications to help minimize withdrawal symptoms. Clients are typically put on a 10-day taper of buprenorphine—either Suboxone® or Subutex®—with the first 5 days occurring at the Detox Center and the last 5 days occurring at Renaissance Ranch.
Self Detox
Self detox is slightly different and offers clients who cannot get into medical detoxification the opportunity to still enjoy the benefits of detox as a first step in addiction recovery. With self detox, we refer our clients to several physicians who are Suboxone certified through the state of Utah. These clients will undergo a 7-day taper, all of which occurs at Renaissance Ranch. One important thing to note here is that Suboxone can only be administered if a client has had recent usage of opiates.
